By adding beetroot to our perfectly honed falafel recipe, we combine the earthy flavours of beetroot with the traditional flavours of falafel. Alongside its punchy flavour, the beetroot gives the falafel a delicious sweetness (not to mention a vibrant colour!). Beetroot also plays a functional role in binding all the ingredients together – a true unifier!
Adding in another layer of sweetness is the red pepper; these are the most sweet and gentle flavoured of all the pepper varieties, and, similarly to beetroot, red peppers add a splash of colour, as well as adding a difference in texture providing the occasional crunch.
The spices used create a subtle warmth to the falafel. Cumin is probably the most prevalent of the Middle Eastern spices as well as being one of the most popular in the world. It’s a strong flavoured savoury spice that’ll hit you on the nose and on the tastebuds! Coriander seeds are cumin’s partner in crime; cutting through the earthiness with subtle citrus notes whilst still giving a warm spiciness. Not forgetting the dried chilli flakes, which add a warm fiery punch.
